How every fill in is checked
- One way to fill the grid. A second program, written apart from the one that makes the puzzles, tries every way to fit the listed words into the empty grid, starting from the word already in place, and finds exactly one.
- Clean grids. Every run of two or more boxes across or down is a word from the list, each listed word is in the grid once, the grid is one connected piece and no word touches another side by side.
- Real theme words. Every word comes from the theme named at the top of the page, and no word is on our blocked list.
- Full solutions at the back, four to a page on 8 in and wider pages.
What you choose
| Level | Easy (words of 3 to 7 letters, up to 14 a puzzle), medium (3 to 10 letters, up to 20) or hard (3 to 12 letters, up to 26); small pages and large print hold fewer words, so the boxes stay big |
|---|---|
| Puzzles | 16 to 150 on 8.5 × 11 in, one to a page; the form shows the range for each size and level |
| Themes | One theme a puzzle, its name at the top of the page: 103 everyday themes in turn, or the ones you pick from 163, the 60 Christmas and winter themes included |
| Large print | On by default: boxes of 26 pt and up, the starting word at 16 pt and up, word lists at 18 pt |
| Trim size | 6 × 9, 7 × 10, 8 × 10, 8.5 × 11 in or A4; white or cream paper |
| Title and author | Your title, subtitle and name or imprint, printed on the cover, the spine and the title page |
| Seed | The same seed and settings make exactly the same book again; left empty, every book is new |
Questions
What is a fill in puzzle?
A crossword without clues. The grid is empty and the words are given, grouped by length; the solver fits each word into the boxes so that crossing words share their letters. One word is in place to start, and every puzzle can be filled in only one way. The book’s how-to page explains the rules on one page.
Will KDP accept the files?
Each book passes our check against KDP’s published paperback specs before you can download it: page size, page count, embedded fonts, margins and gutter for the page count, cover size and spine. If KDP still rejects the files within 30 days, the book’s 500 credits go back to your key.
Can I make a series?
Yes. One book per level with your series name in the title, a book on themes you pick, or the same level with new grids in each volume: every book without a seed gets new puzzles.
What goes in the listing?
listing.txt in the ZIP has a title, subtitle, description, seven keyword ideas and the print options to pick on KDP. The preview folder has six images of real pages for your listing.
