How every cryptogram is checked
- Every code decoded again. A second program rebuilds the code from the printed letters alone and confirms it gives back the quote and its author, letter by letter.
- Fair codes. No letter ever stands for itself, each puzzle has its own code, the given letters are the right ones, and punctuation and spaces print exactly as in the quote. No coded word spells a word from our blocked list.
- Real quotes, rightly credited. 747 quotes by 118 writers who died before 1930, so the words are in the public domain. Each was checked line by line against its source, and a line first written in another language is given in a translation printed before 1930 or in our own plain one; lines that are only attributed to a writer, or were first printed later, were left out.
- Full answers at the back: every quote with its author.
What you choose
| Level | Easy (three letters of each code given, two for a long quote), medium (one letter given) or hard (none given, and only quotes long enough to crack from word patterns) |
|---|---|
| Puzzles | 33 to 300 on 8.5 × 11 in with large print; the form shows the range for each size and level |
| Large print | On by default: two quotes a page on 8 in and wider pages, one on smaller ones (regular print: three or two) |
| Trim size | 6 × 9, 7 × 10, 8 × 10, 8.5 × 11 in or A4; white or cream paper |
| Title and author | Your title, subtitle and name or imprint, printed on the cover, the spine and the title page |
| Seed | The same seed and settings make exactly the same book again; left empty, every book is new |
Questions
Whose quotes are in the books?
Writers, thinkers and wits who died before 1930: Benjamin Franklin, Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Henry David Thoreau, Lewis Carroll, Shakespeare, Aesop, Confucius and many more. Nothing offensive, religious or political.
Can a quote repeat?
Never within one book. Each book draws its quotes from the whole list, so two books share some quotes but rarely many.
Will KDP accept the files?
Each book passes our check against KDP’s published paperback specs before you can download it: page size, page count, embedded fonts, margins and gutter for the page count, cover size and spine. If KDP still rejects the files within 30 days, the book’s 500 credits go back to your key.
What goes in the listing?
listing.txt in the ZIP has a title, subtitle, description, seven keyword ideas and the print options to pick on KDP. The preview folder has six images of real pages for your listing.
